Construction Starts at the Upham’s Corner Comfort Station

HBI is pleased to announce construction has at long last begun on the Upham’s Corner Comfort Station!  Together with our community partner, The American City Coalition, Historic Boston was designated in 2015 by the City of Boston’s Department of Neighborhood Development to rehabilitate the former public restroom into Sip & Spoke Bike Kitchen. The bike and coffee shop will be owned and operated by Dorchester entrepreneur, Noah De Amor.  HBI recently completed the fundraising and permitting necessary to begin the work.

Construction is underway!

General Contractor MJ Mawn, Inc., who recently finished rehabilitation of the Fowler Clark Epstein Farm in Mattapan, has just completed demolition of the building’s interior walls, carefully removing and stockpiling the beautiful slate bathroom stall partitions for reuse in the future café.   Mawn’s focus now is repairing the chimney and replacing the mission style clay tile roof before winter weather arrives.  The building has been vacant and neglected since 1977, and exposure to rain and snow has contributed to its deterioration.

A big thank you to our sponsors and partners!

Construction completion is anticipated in spring of 2019.  Stay tuned for updates and photos of construction progress in the months to come.
