HBI is pleased to announce that Brian Awe, Barbara Boylan, Karilyn Crockett, Marla Curtis, Michael Durand were elected to membership of HBI’s Board of Directors at the organization’s annual meeting on March 23rd. At the same meeting, HBI bid a sad farewell to outgoing board members Alex Krieger, Drew Leff, Carolyn Osteen, and Jay Wickersham, thanking them for their deep commitment to HBI’s work. In particular, the Board cited the contributions of long-time board member Carolyn Osteen who completed 37 years of service to HBI. Alex, Drew, Carolyn and Jay will join HBI’s Council of Advisors.

 

HBI is very pleased to have the addition of this talented class of new board members:

Brian Awe– Brian Awe is an associate at DLA Piper in Boston. Brian practices in the areas of real estate development, financing, acquisitions, dispositions, joint ventures and leasing. He also has experience with local and state governmental financing initiatives, including development tax incentive programs. Among his representative development projects in Boston are the mixed-use development of Boston’s Fan Pier, the Millennium Tower and Burnham Building Project, located on the site of the former Filene’s department store, and Hayward Place condominium. Prior to joining DLA Piper, Brian served as counsel to the Downtown Crossing Partnership, advising in all aspects of the creation of Boston’s first Business Improvement District (BID). Brian has continued his involvement with the newly-formed Downtown Boston BID, and serves as an officer of the BID Corporation. Brian is a graduate of Boston College Law School and University of California, Santa Barbara. Brian is a resident of Beacon Hill.

Barbara Boylan– Barbara J. Boylan AIA, Vice President of The Druker Company, Ltd., has 30 years of industry experience, including construction, permitting, design and architecture in both the public and private sectors, in a variety of development projects encompassing mixed use office, retail, residential and hotel projects in the City of Boston. Her most recent focus is as the Project Manager for the 80 East Berkeley Street, 320,000 sf 11-story mixed use office project (EB80) in the South End. Barbara Boylan’s career path proves that she has never been one to shy away from a challenge. Before joining The Druker Company, Ltd. Barbara was vice president and regional executive at Skanska USA’s New England office in Boston and the vice president of design and construction at Boston Global Investors (BGI). She also served as the former Director of Design at the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) where she monitored the Federal Transit Authority (FTA) Key Station Program, providing accessibility to the oldest subway in America with oversight of the annual $500 million Capital Investment Program.

Barbara is licensed architect, and has served three terms on the Massachusetts Designer Selection Board. She is currently co-chair of the Urban Land Institute/Boston/New England (ULI) Infrastructure Council, and a member of the American Institute of Architects with elected positions to the Boston Society of Architects (BSA) Ethics and Nominating Committees. Barbara holds her Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Notre Dame, and a S. M. Arch. S degree from MIT. Barbara lives in Winchester.

Karilyn Crockett– Dr. Karilyn Crockett is Director of Economic Policy and Research for the City of Boston’s Office of Economic Development where she is tasked with creating an equity-driven policy framework for guiding Mayor Martin Walsh’s job creation, land use planning and workforce development strategies. Karilyn’s research and academic work focuses on large-scale land use changes in twentieth century American cities and examines the social and geographic implications of structural poverty. Her dissertation entitled, “People Before Highways: Reconsidering Routes to and from the Boston Anti-Highway Movement ” investigates a 1960s era grassroots movement to halt urban extension of the interstate highway system. Prior to graduate school, Karilyn co-founded Multicultural Youth Tour Of What’s Now (MYTOWN), an award-winning, educational nonprofit organization that hired public high school students to research their local and family histories and produce youth-led walking tours for sale to public audiences. During its nearly 15 years of operation, MYTOWN employed more than 300 low and moderate-income teenagers, who in turn led public walking tours for more than 14,000 visitors and residents. The National Endowment for the Humanities cited MYTOWN as “One of ten best Youth Humanities Programs in America.” Karilyn holds a Ph.D. from the American Studies program at Yale University, a Master of Science in Geography from the London School of Economics, and a Master of Arts and Religion from the Yale Divinity School. Karilyn lives in Dorchester.

Marla Curtis– For over two decades Marla Curtis has run a private architectural and consulting firm Marla Glanzer Curtis, A.I.A. in Boxford, Massachusetts. Before she began her own practice, Marla worked for The Architectural Team in Chelsea and Developmental Resources in Cambridge and she continues to work with The Architectural Team as an architectural consultant. A graduate of Cornell University, Marla’s work with The Architectural Team has largely focused on the design of affordable housing in historic buildings such as the rehabilitation of a historic mill building in Ludlow, Massachusetts to 75 residential units and a design of residential lofts for two historic mills in New London, Connecticut. Additionally Marla currently serves as a Council Member for the National Trust for Historic Preservation and has served as a Board Member of the Anti-Defamation League in Boston. Prior to joining the Board of Directors, Marla served on HBI’s Council of Advisors. Marla is a resident of Boxford.

Michael Durand– Michael Durand is the President and Principal of Back Bay Development Group, a firm that specializes in the development and construction of Luxury Residential Property in the downtown Boston and surrounding markets. Michael has been actively developing residential real estate for the last 32 years. With his current focus on the downtown Boston market, he has developed over $70 million of residential property over the past five years. Most recently, Michael completed the $27 million development of 9 Commonwealth Avenue. The project included a complete interior rebuild, addition of automated parking, and the removal and replacement of the entire exterior facade. Michael has a Bachelor’s of Science from the University of Denver in Real Estate Finance and Construction Management. Before joining the Board of Directors, he was a member of HBI’s Council of Advisors. Michael is a Back Bay resident.
