Jeff Shaw, AIA, LEED-AP is a Principal of Donham & Sweeney, Architects. His major projects include extensive renovation, restoration, and new construction at Saint Cecilia Parish in Boston, St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, the Arlington Street Church, and Theodore Parker Church in West Roxbury, as well as First Parish Church in Saco, ME, in addition to Police and Fire Stations across the area. He is an active member of the Park Street Church in Boston, where he serves as a member of the finance and administration committee and the chair of the facilities committee as well as steering building and renovation projects as part of the church’s 200th anniversary capital campaign.
Thomas E. Nutt-Powell was co-founder and former President of MI&PL. He currently serves on the Executive Committee, with particular responsibility for Houses of Worship. He is a parishioner at All Saints Episcopal Church, Brookline, Massachusetts, where he has had major responsibility for over $1.6 million in capital improvements from 1992 to 2008, including new heating generation and distribution systems that resulted in a reduction of fuel use of about 40%. He works with parishes on comprehensive facilities assessments and is conducting a capital needs assessment for First Church Unitarian Universalist of Boston in the Back Bay.
How to Find St. Mary’s
Upham’s Corner is at the intersection of Dudley Street and Columbia Road, at the bottom of Jones Hill. Cushing Avenue is a small street that goes up Jones Hill between the Strand Theater and the Sovereign Bank.
By Bus: Take the 15, 16, 17 or 41 bus and get off at the Upham’s Corner stop. All detailed schedules and maps can be found on the MBTA’s website, www.mbta.com. St. Mary’s is a 3 minute walk up Cushing Avenue on the left.
By T: Take the red line to Savin Hill (this is on the Ashmont branch). Head northwest (left) on Savin Hill Ave. You will pass Sydney Street, Tuttle Street, and then Dorchester Ave. Turn right at Pleasant St. and then turn left onto Stoughton St. The church will be on your left just before you reach Columbia Rd. It is approximately a 15 minute walk. All detailed schedules and maps can be found on the MBTA’s website, www.mbta.com.
By Car: For personalized driving directions go to Map Quest or Google Maps, or call (617) 282-3181. Cushing Ave. is one-way going into Columbia Road. To reach Cushing Ave. from Columbia Road driving north, turn right onto Hancock St. (across the street from Pilgrim Church) and immediately turn left onto Upham Ave. Take the second left onto Cushing Ave. St. Mary’s will be in front of you at the next corner. To reach Cushing Ave. from Columbia Road driving south, cross Dudley St. at the light, turn left onto Hancock St. and follow the directions above.
There is on-street parking only, including along Stoughton Street (the continuation of Dudley St. once it crosses Columbia Rd.) next to the Dorchester North Burying Ground. There is a walkway from Stoughton St. to the entrance of St. Mary’s.
From the Mass Pike: Take the Mass Turnpike all the way in to Rt. 93 South. Take 93 S. to Exit 15 Columbia Rd./ JFK Library/UMass. Bear right at end of ramp and get into middle lane, go through two lights, and at the third light turn hard left onto Columbia Rd. Go through one light and at the next light turn left onto Stoughton St. St. Mary’s church will be on the right up on the hill. Park on either side of Stoughton St. and walk up steps to the back side of the church.
