Eliot Burying Ground

About This Project

Eliot Burying Ground, 1630, Roxbury, MA

Also known as the Eustis Street Burying Ground and the Old Roxbury Burying Ground, this burying place was established in 1630. It is one of the three oldest of Boston’s historic burying grounds and the oldest in Roxbury. Near the Eustis Street entrance is the Dudley family tomb. Those buried there include Governor Thomas Dudley, Governor Joseph Dudley, Chief Justice Paul Dudley and Colonel William Dudley. The Ministers or Parish Tomb holds the remains of the site’s name sake, the colonial minister John Eliot, and five early pastors of the First Church of Roxbury.

In 1989 HBI, in partnership with the Boston Parks and Recreation Department, raised funds and supported comprehensive repair and conservation of slate gravestones at this site.
