In a year that has challenged us all, Historic Boston Inc. (HBI) continued its important preservation mission while also rising to meet the challenges of Covid-19 and our city’s demands for racial equity. As we approach year-end, please consider a gift to HBI that will ensure important preservation projects stay on course and new ones can advance in 2021. With your support, HBI will continue to invest in historic places that make a difference for Bostonians.
Even while working remotely and navigating the pandemic’s uncertainties, this has been a year of achievements at HBI:

- We advanced a plan for a new development of 100% workforce income housing units at the historic St. James African Orthodox Church (1910) in Roxbury that respond to the community’s hopes for preservation of the historic church and provide home ownership opportunities accessible to neighborhood residents.
- Restoration of the 1912 Upham’s Corner Comfort Station in Dorchester is nearly complete and the building is being made ready for Dorchester-resident run Comfort Kitchen, activating the Arts and Crafts style building for the first time in 43 years.
- HBI’s proposal for the 1880s Owen Nawn Factory in Nubian Square as a health and wellness center for Rocbury-based The Wellness Collaborative, a non-profit team of three African-American medical professionals, advances new approaches to fighting healthcare disparities in communities of color.

- Structural improvements began at the Ralph Adams Cram – designed St. Luke’s Chapel (1901) in Roxbury’s John Eliot Square, in partnership with the Episcopal Diocese of Massachusetts and John St. James Church, following plans to re-activate the tiny chapel for community space.
When historic buildings are preserved and repurposed, they are a great source of pride, creating jobs, housing, and entrepreneurial opportunities in their communities.
