Comfort Kitchen set for January 20th opening at the renewed Upham’s Corner Comfort Station

The staff and leadership of Comfort Kitchen are raising their glasses this New Year’s Eve to the news that the City of Boston issued their occupancy permit this week for the the newly restored Upham’s Corner Comfort Station  at 611 Columbia Road in Dorchester.  The team of Nyacko Pearl Perry, Biplaw Rai, Rita Ferriera, and Kwasi Kwaa unveil their café and restaurant on January 20th, show casing the team’s highly anticipated menu of global comfort food.

Historic Boston completed the building’s $1.9 million rehabilitation in 2020.  Built by the City of Boston in 1912 as public restrooms for travelers on the MBTA’s streetcar system, it was vacant and in a deteriorated state for more than 40 years until 2015 when Historic Boston’s proposal for the building’s restoration and reuse was accepted by the City of Boston.

The new restaurant is training 20 new employees and features a full bar and seating for 40 people.  In warmer months, outdoor terraces on either side of the building will provide additional seating areas for diners.

HBI is grateful to the Comfort Kitchen team, architects Supernormal and Utile Architecture and Planning, and general contractor MJ Mawn, for their work in creatively adapting the historic comfort station for the new restaurant.

“Comfort Kitchen’s redevelopment has been an incredible odyssey for everyone involved,” said team member Biplaw Rai, “Our collaboration with Historic Boston is a model for how to leverage everyone’s strengths for the benefit of an enterprise that will make our community better.”
