25 Aug 2026 August Office Artifact: August 2,1964 Boston Globe Magazine
This month, we give you a copy of a 1964 paper from the Boston Globe Sunday Magazine (today’s Boston Globe!) featuring the then newly restored Old Corner Bookstore!
Thomas Boylston Adams, then President of the Massachusetts Historical Society, wrote:
“But why should we refer to the noble work which has just gone on at the corner of Washington and School Streets as restoration? Continuation would be a better word. Would not the Friday afternoon audience, and all Boston, be shocked were Eric Leinsdorf to advertise on his program a revival of Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony? Yet we speak calmly of a revival of “Hamlet.” As if the great play had ever been dead…A play is no more revived than is a piece of music. It is performed. So it is with buildings. They are built and maintained and their influence is continued. And in this respect Boston is supremely lucky.”
This newspaper was donated to HBI by Robert E. Grindle, formerly of Doubleday Books, in June 2025.
