29 Dec Old Corner Bookstore Augmented Reality App Now Available for Android and iOS Devices
Historic Boston Inc.’s (HBI) Augmented Reality installation at the Old Corner Bookstore, Look Again, is now available for download for iOS and Android devices.
Originally launched during Boston’s 2017 Illuminus Art Festival in November, the project presents five historic views of the Old Corner Bookstore overlaid onto the contemporary building. Users need to download an application from either Google Play or the App Store in order to trigger the program. A sample can be viewed here and you can learn more by visiting the AR page on HBI’s website.
Over its 300 year history, the Old Corner Bookstore has been home to commercial ventures ranging from world-famous publishers to 5-cent pizza shops, reflecting the varied and diverse history of Boston itself. From this corner at Washington Street and School Street, the Old Corner Bookstore witnessed the birth of the American Revolution in the 1770’s, ushered in a gold-age of American literature in the 1850’s, and narrowly escaped Urban Renewal movement of the 1960’s.
HBI commissioned Look Again to celebrate the Old Corner Bookstore’s third century of continuous use in 2018. Artists Ethan Vogt and Giovanna Casimiro and a technical team assembled by Dudley Square Studios created the Augmented Reality (A.R.) invention that reveals the Old Corner Bookstore’s past and envisions its future.
