24 Apr Spring Celebration Kicks of New Roxbury Cultural District
Mark your calendars and save Friday May 18thand Saturday May 19thfor two extraordinary events heralding the new Roxbury Cultural District.
The Roxbury Cultural District was designated by the Massachusetts Cultural Council in a competitive process that evaluated the art and cultural offerings of the neighborhood and the community readiness to implement new programs and cultural offerings in the designated area. Since designation last year, the Roxbury Cultural District has formed its board of directors, selected officers and filed its incorporation papers and its state and federal papers for charitable tax status.
On the evening of Friday May 18th, a reception will be held at the Bolling Building (2300 Washington Street Roxbury) in Dudley Square to unveil the District’s plans. This festive evening of food, drink and art will also feature local artists, musicians and performers. A silent auction will feature unique art pieces by Roxbury artists. The cost is just $75 and all proceeds benefit the new organization.
On Saturday May 19th, an outdoor celebration of the neighborhood’s arts and culture will take place for the broader community on the Blair Lot in Dudley Square between Washington Street and Harrison Ave. A parade of performers will proceed from the Bolling Building and Dudley Station to a live stage for a stream of music and dancing performances by local artists.
