Exploring the Stained Glass Windows at 50 Cedar Street

For our research into the history of 50 Cedar Street, HBI asked architect and historian, Lance Kasparian for his help in identifying the origins and significance of the church’s opalescent stained glass windows. With the help of Thomas Cairns MD, Archivist of the Evangelical Free Church of America in Minneapolis , Lance investigated the records of the Norwegian immigrant congregation who built the church and furnished the windows between 1910 and 1915. While this did not reveal the name of the stained glass designer or artisans, it did provide useful information about the building’s historic fabric and construction. Lance was also able to uncover some extraordinary connections between the stained glass windows and Boston’s vibrant progressive movement and community of stained glass artisans during the early 20th century.
